Existence of Smooth Solutions to Navier-Stokes
Update (10.10.06): The paper has been “withdrawn by the author due a serious flaw”.
The big math news is that Penny Smith of Lehigh University appears to have proved the existence of smooth solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. This is one of the ten Millenium Problems for which the Clay Mathematics Institute is offering a million-dollar prize. Brooks Moses has written a very illuminating non-technical explanation of Dr. Smith’s work. If it turns out that the proof is correct, then everyone working in fluid mechanics will be able to sleep a bit better at night; Penny, however, might have to change her name.
(On a non-mathematical note, I observe that Brooks Moses and I are both using the Ocadia theme for Wordpress. It’s a beautiful theme, but I’m feeling very generic. Sometimes I wish I had artistic ability.)

Thanks for the link!
(And, yeah, I feel a bit generic about using the Ocadia theme, too. I only meant to use it for a short while until I made something more unique, and here it is half a year later and I still haven’t gotten around to it!)
